Orthodontist Indianapolis: All About Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities of teeth and jaws, especially concerning occlusion and alignment. Improper teeth and jaw alignment or occlusion are harder to clean that may result to tooth decay and gum disease. The additional effort and stressed caused by improperly aligned teeth and jaw leads to headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain, and TMJ syndrome. Orthodontic treatments promotes a healthier mouth, stronger teeth and improved appearance. An orthodontist is a specialist in the field of orthodontics that help patients correct bites, occlusion and alignment of teeth. Orthodontists are graduates of four years general dentistry and additional two or more years of education in an approved training program.

It is only a dentist or orthodontist who can perform diagnostic procedures to determine if you ‘ll benefit from an orthodontic treatment. Diagnostic evaluation involves full physical examination, dental health history, clinical exam, x-rays, photographs and plaster models of your teeth. The following conditions require orthodontic treatment: overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, misplaced midline, spacing and crowding. Overbite or buck teeth is the sticking out of upper ront teeth over the lower teeth. If the upper teeth is too far back or the lower teeth are too far forward, it is called underbite or “bulldog”. If the upper teeth don’t come down in front of the lower teeth when biting, the condition is known as crossbite. Open bite is the presence of space between the biting surfaces of the front and side teeth if the back teeth bite together. Misplaced midline refers to the improper alignment of the center of the upper front teeth to the center of lower teeth. Teeth that don’t fill up the mouth or missing teeth leads to spacing. Too many teeth in the dental ridge that cannot be accommodated leads to crowding.

There are many types of appliances, categorized into two which are fixed and removable, helping in moving the teeth, retaining muscles and affecting the growth of the jaws. Fixed appliances include braces, special fixed appliances and fixed space maintainers, whereas removable appliances include aligners, removable space maintainers, jaw repositioning appliances, lip and neck bumpers, palatal expander, removable retainers and headgear. Braces are the most common fixed appliances, consisting of bands, wires and brackets. Brackets are used to bond the front tooth, and the bands are fixed around the tooth or teeth and used as anchors for the appliance.
